Responsibilities

Job Duties and Responsibilities

We carry out contract audit work for the European Commission and other International Institutions. PKF Littlejohn has a Partner permanently based in Brussels to oversee the completion of assignments on this and other European contracts, as well as to identify new business opportunities.

Purpose and aim of the role

  • The post holder will assist in management and supervision of the individual batch contracts allocated to PKF Littlejohn;
  • Assist the Partner in charge of the Co-ordination Office in supervising and directing the other office personnel;
  • Act as deputy to the Partner as necessary;
  • Aid in the development of new business, including identifying opportunities, and preparation of tender submissions;
  • Review audit reports to ensure quality, consistency and clarity;
  • Supervise and manage on a day-to-day basis the activities and workload of the other Brussels office team members (typically 2 – 4 persons at any one time).

Duties and responsibilities

Planning, monitoring and review

  • Batch planning which will include staff planning, detailed planning at an individual assignment level including liaising with the beneficiary;
  • Managing batches, including liaising with the assignment leader during and post the audit, ensuring that the assignment leader works to our strict reporting deadlines with the EC, keeping our Brussels team informed of any problems, ensuring queries from our Brussels team and the EC are responded to promptly and ensuring that we complete our assignments within the contractual deadlines;
  • File and report reviews – detailed quality assurance reviews of individual assignment audit reports to ensure: compliant with relevant contractual terms, presentational compliance with prescribed report template, general satisfies the prevailing in-house quality and consistency standards and otherwise work has been completed in accordance with prescribed work programmes, properly documented and signed-off;
  • Other duties including managing FP7 certification work and managing a small portfolio of non-EC clients who are beneficiaries of EU funding, etc.

Staff management

  • Supervision of administrator.

Technical and research

  • Focal point for technical advice/expertise, including producing relevant guidance;
  • Ensuring up to date knowledge of applicable rules, procedures, guidance and accounting standards (IAS);
  • Producing Technical Bulletins and other information to aid audit firms in their work; developing working papers, report templates and other tools;
  • Maintaining key resources in a central folder.

Support to Partner in Charge

  • Replacing or standing in for partner-in-charge at meetings with EC officials or in other communications (e.g., contentious reports, review comments; discussions over late completion/penalty charges, etc.);
  • Negotiating with audit firms over technical, administrative or contractual matters issues as necessary;
  • Developing new business contacts and opportunities both with EU institutions and beneficiaries of EU funding (including tender preparation);
  • Aiding in the preparation of periodic tenders/proposals for EU institutions and other prospective clients.

Person Specification

Skills and Qualifications

Experience

  • External audit experience, ideally with previous exposure to working with or for International Institutions with a grant audit perspective and/or internal audit work;
  • Excellent report writing and communication skills in English.

Qualifications

  • Qualified ACA or ACCA, or equivalent.

Language skills

  • Fluent English;
  • Written and ideally spoken French to intermediate (B2) or advanced (C1) level or another mainstream EU (e.g., German, Spanish or Italian) language would be advantageous.

IT Skills

  • Microsoft Excel – proficient user level;
  • Microsoft Word – proficient user level;
  • PowerPoint – Basic user level;
  • Access – Basic user level.
