The European Carbon and Graphite Association is looking for a new staff member to join its Brussels-based team.

About the Association

Around 30 companies in Europe are involved in the production of carbon and graphite from raw materials (coke, pitch, natural graphite mining and processing). They turn the carbon and graphite material from a commodity into custom-made end products.

The association, with its office in Brussels, maintains contacts with European and national authorities and other associations, publishes documentation in the name of the industry and manages committees and ad-hoc teams, directed at promoting the industry ’s activities.

Special activities are developed in the field of environmental protection, health and safety (EHS) and chemical policy (REACH) i.e.:

  • It is the industry's voice to contribute to the EU's raw materials policy;
  • It is the industry's voice commenting on new European and national regulations relevance;
  • It provides a forum for the exchange of general, non-proprietary methods to reduce emissions and energy consumption and to improve waste prevention;
  • It collects statistics, and exchanges information with other associations, particularly in the USA and Japan;
  • It manages REACH consortia.

Special activities are also developed in the field of its markets and trade:

  • It is the industry’s voice regarding the EU’s industrial policy;
  • It is the industry’s voice regarding the EU’s import and export regulations;
  • It monitors trends and international EU-trade policy.

About the role

The new position of a Manager on Sustainable Value Chains and Marketing will have the following primary responsibilities:

  • To manage and extend the two existing market-oriented groups on:

1) Steel applications - managing the agenda on issues such as circular economy, energy efficiency, monitoring market developments and developing research and its implications for the sector;

2) Graphite powder applications – managing the agenda on issues such as battery and e-mobility application, following market-related issues and developing research and its implications for the sector.

  • To set up a new group on:

3) Carbon fibre applications – managing the agenda on issues such as plastics, aerospace, defence etc. as well as recycling and sustainability questions.

  • To monitor relevant legislation and other related initiatives for these market segments and to follow the work plan and actions as agreed by the committees, the Board and the General Assembly of ECGA;
  • This position will have a strong focus on sustainability initiatives and circular economy policies;
  • Encouraging member participation;
  • Some positioning/soft lobbying responsibilities.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Relevant university degree, e.g. economics, law, EU studies or other related fields;
  • Good understanding of European policies (especially trade, internal market, economic and monetary policy) and EU decision-making processes;
  • Solid understanding of sustainability and circular economy topics;
  • Some familiarity with economics and the use of statistics;
  • Ability to create complex graphs in a clear and aesthetic way and interpret them. Proficiency with Excel, Access, PowerPoint;
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills (written and oral);
  • English is the working language; any other European language is a strong asset;
  • A solid professional background of working at an association and/or relevant market knowledge would be additional strong assets.
